The Difference Between Free and Premium: Video

February 25, 2010

In this video, Matt and I discuss what is the real difference between free and premium apps (or anything for that matter) is.

This was a conversation we had during our recent trip to Nashville for a client. We started it out by talking about the iPhone app store. There’s your backstory!

Please make a comment below and tell us how are you providing premium content (tools, whatever) and not letting your free model undercut it?

  1. Free vs. Premium vs. FREEMIUM

I believe that developers need to utilize BOTH free and premium. But the free should be used to showcase, direct, encourage, promote, bring the customer around to your premium products. Give things away to demonstrate quality so that users/customers will WANT to come back for your premium products.

You guys were talking about apps that work. I think its important that BOTH the free product and the premium product BOTH work. Feature crippling is just plain crippling your customer/user and many won’t come back to you for the premium product.

Both a free product and a premium product should both bring value to the user. Free shouldn’t be viewed or used only as a stepping stone to premium. Value is needed at both ends.

    Just my 2 cents.

Benjamin, great two cents as always.

Yeah, both should work because if free doesn’t work it doesn’t help sell your premium work.

I won’t get into free themes …. but overall, definitely agree.

Your point about free being a solidified strategy is an extremely good point. If you just do free without a strategy, it’s a waste.

We are currently in our final stages of development with a “Click to Call” widget that will be able to be placed on any website. We are developing four versions, with the least cost to us being a Free “click to leave a voicemail”. The system will then email a .wav file to the email address registered to the feature.

Second version is a straight click to call that will ring one number at a low monthly price.

Third version will be click to call with “follow-me” so the client can list up to three additional numbers for the feature to ring – a little bit more of a monthly cost

Fourth version will have everything above with an auto attendant and full analytics – of course at a little higher yet of a cost.

    Thoughts?
