While juggling the many tasks I have here a iThemes (and finding time for a game or two), I have managed to fit in time to work on a new ecommerce child theme for Builder: Thrifty.
Thrifty combines the usefulness of the popular ecommerce plugins for WordPress and the power of Builder’s layout engine. It’s minimalist style shifts focus away from the design and on to what is most important to the store owner: products.
Thrifty boasts many subtle features when it comes to design. In the past, we have steered clear of such features because we did not want to hinder the flexibility of Builder, but now we are exploring new bounds for our themes.
One such feature is the layout of the blog when Builder uses a content area larger than 700px (most likely a full width layout). Using this layout type will cause the post meta to float left of the post title and content.
Don’t use a content width larger than 700px? No need to worry, Thrifty automatically adjusts the post meta based on the size of the content.
Another cool feature is the style of the forms and notifications (something ecommerce themes use bountifully). I spent much time perfecting these feature and it’s probably my favorite.
We will leave the other features out there for you to discover when we release Thrifty.
As stated above, Thrifty supports four popular WordPress ecommerce plugins. Each plugin has its own features (more on this later), but all provide you with the ability to accomplish one specific goal: sell your own products on your own website.
After working with each of these plugins, I would say that Shopp is by far my favorite (another blog post about this later). For this reason, I am only going to tease some of Shopps design features here. I’ll save the rest for the Thrifty theme demo.
We have really paid close attention to some core functionalities of Shopp. The grid and layout views (default with Shopp), easily allow customers to switch to a view that suits them. In addition, the account, downloads, orders, product, cart and purchase pages are completely customized and easy to use.
Specific Plugin Features
As stated above, each plugin provides its own set of ecommerce features. For this reason, no two shops will look, act or behave exactly the same way. This is one of the reasons ecommerce themes are such a challenge for us. We are essentially creating four different themes in one. Not to worry, we have worked extremely hard to bring out all the functionalities of each ecommerce plugin.
We are very excited to release this ecommerce theme (and more) to our community. No matter which ecommerce plugin you choose as your store solution, we will strive to provide custom store solution for those plugins that we know are safe for our customers to use.
