BackupBuddy can be uploaded, activated and used just like any other plugin. While BackupBuddy can back up both Self-Hosted sites and Multisites, it can be activated differently (strong recommended!) on a Multisite network.

  • Remember:
    • SELF-HOSTED SITES usually mean either sites NOT PART OF ANY Multisite.
    • MULTISITE NETWORKS either refer to the entire Multisite OR just the TOP NETWORK site on which Multisite was installed. This is also the domain where you log in as the NETWORK ADMIN to perform NETWORK ADMIN actions.
    • MULTISITE SITES refer to INDIVIDUAL SITES inside a MULTISITE. This CAN include the individual site REGULAR ADMIN area of the TOP MULTISITE NETWORK.
    • The term MULTISITE is used loosely to refer to EITHER Multisite Networks OR Multisite Sites OR both.

Self-Hosted Sites

By Self-Hosted Sites, we are referring to any WordPress site where Multisite is NOT activated nor used in any manner. It is a site where you installed WordPress directly without enabling or activating or integrating Multisite in any manner.

Upload BackupBuddy on Self-Hosted Site

  • You can upload BackupBuddy on any Self-Hosted (non-Multisite) site just like any other plugin.
    • You can use cPanel to upload the plugin to wp-content/plugins directory and then extract it.
    • You can extract the BackupBuddy zip file on your computer and then uplaod the BackupBuddy folder via FTP to your wp-content/plugins directory.
    • You can use the WordPress --> Plugins --> Add New --> Upload feature to upload the zip file.

Activate BackupBuddy on Self-Hosted Site

  • You can activate BackupBuddy like any other plugin.
    • Visit your WordPress --> Plugins area.
    • Activate BackupBuddy.

Your BackupBuddy is now installed and ready to use on your Self-Hosted site. Congratulations!

Multisite

Installing BackupBuddy on Multisite is different than installing BackupBuddy on Self-Hosted (non-Multisite) sites.

Upload BackupBuddy on Multisite

  • When it comes to Multisite, you upload BackupBuddy as if it were any other plugin being uploaded to Multisite.
This will ONLY work when you're logged in as the Network Administrator on the top Network site.

Activating BackupBuddy on Multisite

  • Activating BackupBuddy on Multisite is almost completely different than activating BackupBuddy on Self-Hosted Sites.
  • There is only one official way to install BackupBuddy on a Multisite, which is the strongly recommended NETWORK ACTIVATE method.
    • RECOMMENDED 1 : NETWORK ACTIVATE Method:
      • Log into the top Network site's WP Admin login area as a Network Administrator.
      • Go to WordPress --> Plugins area.
      • Click the "Network Activate" link under BackupBuddy on the Plugins page.
        • This will enable BackupBuddy for all sites in the Network.
        • This will allow ONLY the TOP NETWORK ADMIN to be able to backup all sites in the Network.
        • Each site admin (the user level below TOP NETWORK ADMIN) can still export and backup their own single sites.
          • Anyone with admin (regular OR super/network) access can now backup the ENTIRE MULTISITE through their non-Multisite login in the Multisite Site where BackupBuddy was activated using Option 2.
    • NOT RECOMMENDED - 2 - SINGLE SITE INSIDE MULTISITE INSTALL :
      • Log into your site, which is part of the Multisite, as a Site Admin (NOT Super/Network Admin).
      • Go to WordPress --> Plugins area.
      • Click the "Activate" link under BackupBuddy on the Plugins page.
        • HOWEVER, since this is UNSUPPORTED and NOT RECOMMENDED, you may NOT see ANY BackupBuddy Menu at all for security reasons.
        • Security concerns with ROUTE 2
          • You will see a warning on your ADMIN pages when this method is chosen, suggesting you use the NETWORK ACTIVATE method instead. This is important as without the RECOMMENDED method, your Multisite settings may NOT be saved properly.
          • That site admin will then be able to backup the ENTIRE Multisite, since all sites in the Multisite have their files reside in the same big wp-content/uploads directory.

Your BackupBuddy is now installed and ready to use. Congratulations!
