Hi Karen,
It is pretty safe to create a backup. BackupBuddy doesn't do anything other than when it is creating a backup or run anything on other plugin's pages.
About the only things that can happen is backing up a site is a little intensive since you would be, well, backing up a copy of the whole site into a backup file hopefully as fast as possible. But that shouldn't cause any real troubles.
Another thing is that backups naturally take up some space and if a lot of backups are made and kept on the server it can end up taking a good amount of space. There are some archive and size limits that can be set to protect from this and backups can also be sent offsite to some remote destinations (such as Amazon S3, FTP servers, Dropbox, Rackspace, or downloaded) so they aren't all stored in one place. It is actually good to store a backup offsite at least occasionally for precautions for extra safety.
And yes BackupBuddy will back up all the themes. BackupBuddy backs up everything from the web root (where WordPress is installed) and down. Minus backup exclusions that it is told not to back up.

Hello
Just checking because I'm a non-techie that has designed a WP site with a bought theme from a software company, with help. I'd be at a total loss if I caused my site to die, the logo to corrupt or the functionality to stop working as it currently does, by doing something stupid in the backup process.
Can all themes be backed up, including those bought from specialists such as Themeforest?
Just wondering how safe it is for me to attempt a backup? Or should this be left to the pros?
