I am interested in purchasing the Essence theme, but have a couple of questions:
1. Can you adjust the width of the template?
2. Can the 3 widget areas at the bottom of the template have different content on different pages?
3. Can you add images as well as text to the bottom widget areas?
4. Can you change the background?

Hi Ken,
1. In short, no, there is no setting or theme option to facilitate this, so you're more or less on your own there. It will require more than average css, and possibly php and javascript skills to achieve this.
2. Yes, we usually recommend using this plugin to achieve that
3. Yes, that is standard for all widgets in WordPress.
4. Yes, the theme allows you to specify a colour, or to upload an image of your own choice to be used as the background image.
