I intend to use this as a service for my clients. If they do not renew at the end of the year and I no longer have access to the site, is there a way to shut the backups off?

1. Yes. BackupBuddy can have an archive limit set for backups stored locally and on remote destinations as well. It will remove the oldest once the limit as been exceeded.
2. We do not offer a way to do that.

Yes BackupBuddy can be on WordPress sites that aren't ithemes.
Removing the directory in Dropbox would help for that with scheduled backups and for sending to that destination. Removing the license that is attached to the site can also help if they don't renew but you still have your BackupBuddy subscription, though ultimately there isn't a clear-cut way set up for that kind of "shut off".

BackupBuddy will backup absolutely everything it can, including non-WordPress files of the site. Can also set directory exclusions to tell it to not backup certain parts if desired. When BackupBuddy creates a backup of a site, it is essentially making a copy of the site.

I have purchased a site and have been given the wp-login details. I have not purchased BackupBuddy yet. Will I be able to install BackupBuddy from inside Wordpress like any other plugin? Or will I need access to the cPanel and FTP (which I don't have)?
Thanks,
Eddie

BackupBuddy can be installed as any other plugin. Check out the installation documentation: http://ithemes.com/codex/page/Installing_BackupBuddy
