I have a wordpress site on verio.com with their low end shared hosting plan (basic hosting) and I would like to back up the site. I was wondering if you know if backup buddy will work for this? I assume the mySQL installation is also shared across multiple sites on the server (? not sure, I am just guessing that's how the shared hosting works ?). Will BackupBuddy still work in that case to back up everything about the blog?

Thanks.

Hi Eli,

BackupBuddy does work on shared hostings and there are many who use BackupBuddy fine on them. You can use the free ServerBuddy plugin to help see if the server meets some of the requirements. If the site is really large though then that is where shared hosting really gets hurt because with shared hosting the server is typically slower and has the chance that the host overloads them.

I have installed backup buddy to my wordpress site but get a warning when trying to do a backup that my server doesn't allow Zip command via PHP's exec() function.

I used the template on your site to ask for access and they (123-reg) replied "Unfortunately we cannot provide you access to the shell commands on a shared hosting package. If you really require that access I suggest that you upgrade to one of our Virtual Private Servers"

Is there a way around this to be able to use Backup Buddy or do I need to change to VPS server?

Many thanks

Hi LauraF,

If you have BackupBuddy then best to ask questions relating to it in the BackupBuddy forum after logging in with your ithemes username/password: http://ithemes.com/forum/forum/74-backupbuddy/

When exec isn't available BackupBuddy runs in compatibility mode, which can work if the site isn't very large but not as fast or good as having exec.

Thanks,
