All four themes show feature boxes, but before I purchase one for her I want to make sure that I can do the six she wants.

I think you should choose the design that appeals to you best. Expansion, a Builder child theme, or any Builder child theme will offer maximum flexibility. You could add a module just anywhere on the page, and add the code to create the 6 feature boxes. That could be a widget module, or an html module.
If you are referring to "which theme has 6 separate WordPress widget areas side by side", none of them do. However, one widget can hold the code for 1, 2, 6 or 10 of these boxes,
hope that helps, a bit,

Please bear with me if I seem dense. The more I work with WP the more I learn. This is my first time considering purchasing a theme; previously I've just worked with the free themes available on wordpress.org.
Let's take the Expansion theme for an example because you said that it would be the most versatile. The demo shows three feature areas/boxes. Is the ability to display those boxes "built in" to the theme? From looking at some of the alternative layouts it appears that it is (the "widget widths" layout shows up to five columns, but you said I could do more), but I just want to make sure before I spend someone else's money.
