ServerBuddy says that 644 is needed for the wp-admin folder, surely that will mean that admins won't be able to access the dashboard via their browser?

644 sets it so only the owner can write, others can read. However some web servers are not set up in a way that allows such a strict permission to function properly.

I contacted my hosting support about changing wp-admin to 644. This was their reply:

If you make it 644 you take out the execution bit, which Wordpress Admin does need to run if you expect to administrate your blog. 755 is secure. Honestly, 644 is for Files not directories. It can cause a lot of problems on any servers if you set it to 644 for a directory

Hi,
644 is the default and recommended permission setting for wp-admin contents, so indeed, the files, so the warning has value. The wp-admin folder (and it's containing folders) should have permission 755.

In the wp-admin directory all files are 644 and all sub-directories are 755. Serverbuddy is still warning me of an issue:
