Considering that BackupBuddy is a WP plugin, I assume it uses PHP to connect to the server & run its backup, is that correct?

Can you supply any additional info in regards to the backup methods of BackupBuddy?

Hi Joe

Thanks for your enquiry concerning BackupBuddy.

Yes, BackupBuddy is PHP based as any other WordPress plugin and runs within the WordPress/PHP environment. Regarding the connection to the server that you mention, if by that you mean how does BackupBuddy take a database backup then certainly one method is to use WordPress/PHP functionality to access the database server and access the information required to be in the database backup but it can also take advantage of additional server provided functionality for creating a database dump to be included in a backup provided the host/server makes that functionality available.

If by backup methods you mean how does BackupBuddy create a backup zip archive file then BackupBuddy will try and make use of efficient server provided functionality for creating a backup zip archive  file but if the host does not make that available then BackupBuddy will use zip archive handling library that is installed as part of WordPress core.

You can get some additional information here BackupBuddy - the premiere WordPress backup plugin to backup, restore and move WordPress | iThemes (particularly under the Questions section).

I hope this information will help you in your consideration and certainly if you have any specific requirement please feel free to ask about that, thanks.
