Can the default Store page operate instead as a portal to other store landing pages?

For instance...That default store page might have 6 images, but each one would represent another category or "department"..then when you click each one of those, you are then presented with the "store" page for that applicable category. From each of these, you would proceed to the products.

These category store pages would or could also be accessed via navigation of some sort.

Is that too complex for a beginner to intermediate user?

I wanted to ask this before I start going thru all the documentation and tutorials.
