Also, I am assuming this is the case, so I installed Builder and then installed 'slate' for a new website I am doing. Now, when I installed Builder it automatically offered to create a child theme for me, but slate did not do that. Why is that?
And if it's better to have a child theme, what is easy way to create one for slate, since it did not make one automatically?

sorry to have missed your post, but for efficient and fast (and future) Builder support, please sign in with the username and password you use to access the membership area (from where you downloaded the product(s) you purchased), and post your support request in the Builder support forum: http://ithemes.com/forum/forum/64-builder/
It is always better to use a child theme, since it allows you to apply modifications (in that child theme) without editing the parent theme (with the Builder core) so that you can update Builder without overwriting your modifications or customisations (if any)
If, for whatever reasons you were not prompted to generate a child theme when you activated Builder-Slate, you can always initiate the "create child theme" functionality via wp-dashboard > My Theme > Settings, click the "setup" tab. Since version 5, you do not have to install and/or activate Builder theme before installing another Builder theme, as each theme includes the Core Builder functionality,
hope that clarifies,
