Changing Product Display In Store

I saw the info about changing the Store page template. Just curious, do you (iThemes) use that template?

It seems like you build purchase pages using individual products - which may actually suit my needs to manipulate the product layout. Not sure I really want to jump into php.

Just need something easier to customize the product display.

Exchange didn't automatically set up the required pages (contacted my theme author) so I'm just using the shortcode. Is there a way to 'force' Exchange to set up pages?

Hi dmarkham,

The iThemes site doesn't actually use Exchange at this time.  However, like on the iThemes site, Exchange uses individual product pages.  The slug in Exchange for the product pages is "product," but you can go into Exchange > Settings > Pages and change that to "purchase" (like it is on iThemes.com) or whatever you'd like it to be.  

There isn't a way to  "force" Exchange to create the pages.  It should do it by default, but if it's not, it's most likely due to a theme conflict and using the WordPress page type is the fix.

That's interesting. Any reason why you don't use your own product?

Got the store shortcode to work - but the actual display of the product is pretty useless (at least within my theme - KLEO). Seems like you'd want to build in a little more flexibility about how product is displayed.

Can I display more than one product info on a page other than using the "store"? Do I have any options other than messing around with php?

On an unrelated issue, is there a forum setting here to subscribe to a topic? Seem to have missed it.

Hi dmarkham,

Exchange is just short of a year old whereas iThemes has been around for about 6 years.  We have a whole complex system built using aMember for our products currently and would love to switch to Exchange, but it just can't do all that we need it to at this time.  We do use Exchange on our swag store:  iThemesSwag.com

Without seeing your site, I'm not sure how the products are displaying or what the issue is.  If you provide us with a URL, I can take a look.  There isn't an option to display multiple products on a page other than the store page (and category pages).  You are welcome to create something if you feel comfortable doing so, but that sort of customization would be beyond the scope of this forum.  And the customer would still have to go to the actual product page to make their purchase.

It just looks clunky in this theme. Since people can only purchase from the individual product display I suppose I could create my own store page with links to the product.

Hi dmarkham,

You didn't really explain what you mean by "clunky," but from looking at your site, I think the issue on your store page is that some of the products don't have images and some do.  And the ones that do have images of different sizes.  

You can also always create your own custom styles for Exchange.  When creating custom styles for Exchange, you won't want to edit the exchange.css file directly as any changes you make would be overwritten with an update to Exchange.  Instead, create a directory in your theme called exchange. The directory path would look something like this: /wp-content/themes/YourTheme/exchange/.  Then you'll create a file named style.css where you'll add your custom CSS, then upload the file to the exchange directory you created in your theme.
