Move Your Gmail Signature Above the Quoted Text

by Jesse Petersen

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been sick and tired of scrolling to the bottom of a long thread of messages, cutting my signature, and pasting it below my reply or forward. Apparently, Keith C and Dave C were, too, because they wrote a feature in the Gmail Lab to do that automatically.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Go to your Settings.
  2. Click the Labs link on the far right.
  3. Scroll down to “Signature Tweaks” and select “Enable.”
  4. Voila! It refreshes Gmail so you lose any open chat windows, and you’re good to go.

  1. Funny you mention today… I was just noticing in class tonight that my apps account does not have a Labs link. I’m guessing “no.”

  2. Just came across this, and I have to say “thank you” for letting us know about this tweak. I hadn’t checked out Labs before, either; looks like there are some other useful features there.

  3. I would go so far, as to say that I love you. Now my “Gmail experience” is perfect! I will explore that “labs” thing some more…

    THANK YOU !!!!

  4. Thanks for the tip!

Question is, why do Google put your signature at the bottom of the thread in the first place?

    • There is no standard on whether a reply should be above or below the quoted original nor is there a standard for whether the signature should be at the bottom or below the reply, so that decision was just how the original designers felt it should work.

  5. Whoa! This has been a thorn in my side for years with gmail. I finally googled for some hints/tips to fix this silly signature issue which should be enabled by default. Thanks for the tip! I like gmail once again.

  6. This is great! The default signature placement is really annoying. I don’t understand why they don’t make this placement the default.

  7. Hi,

Now the Signature Tweak is directly included into Gmail. Go to “settings”, then in the “General” tab into the “Signature” section you will be able to check the option to insert your signature before the quoted text (this checkbox is placed under your signature text).

    • Hello,

When this tweak was included into Gmail, it doesn’t work for me anymore . When selected, signature separator does disappear, but the signature still stays on the bottom of the letter. Any suggestions?

      • It’s weird, because it works very well for me. I have also lost the signature separator (but it was signified next to the checkbox) but my signature now is placed before the previous text when I want to answer to someone. So I’m sorry, I didn’t have any suggestions to solve your issue.

  8. If the Signature Tweak is included, how come it keeps saying my signature is too long???

Argh.. after so long I still couldn’t get it done!
