BackupBuddy 4.0: Part 2 – New Backup Profiles and More

BackupBuddy 4.0 just released with a TON of incredible new features. In part 1, we covered BackupBuddy’s new individual file view and restore capabilitiesIn this post, we’ll be showing off BackupBuddy’s new backup profiles and several more new features in 4.0.

Creating a Backup Profile

With BackupBuddy’s new backup profiles, you can:

  • Customize each backup type or create your own profile to override default settings
  • Create manual or scheduled backups based on a profile
  • Set custom files or database tables to be backed up per profile as well as change other advanced settings per profile
  • Backup certain areas of the site at a time
  • View file and database exclusions based on any selected profile on Server Information page (this lets the user see what’s included in a backup with the size of content to be backed up based on that profile)
To get started creating a backup profile, visit the new Backup Profiles tab from BackupBuddy’s Settings page.

To edit one of the existing profiles, click the name. This will reveal settings for database and advanced options so you can further customize the Database Only and Complete Backup profiles.

To add a new custom backup profile, click the “+” sign. From here you can select whether to base this profile on the Database Only and Complete Backup settings.

Click +Add and you’ll now see your new backup profile has been added. Use the configuration settings below to customize the profile.

Click Save Profile Settings. Now, If you return to the Backup page, you’ll see your custom backup profile as a new option in the type of backup to run.

Built-in Tutorials

BackupBuddy 4.0 ships with new built-in tutorials to help guide you through the plugin. These new built-in tutorials interactively step through key features of the plugin.

Check them out by clicking on the Tour This Page link in the upper right-hand corner of any BackupBuddy page.

Create Manual Backup & Send to Destination

You’ll now find a new option to have manual backups automatically sent to a remote destination during the backup process.

When creating a manual backup, just select the Send to remote destination as part of backup process link.

Backups Now Store Meta Information

You’ll find new, improved backup status details in the backup listing. Now you can easily see main backup archive information from within BackupBuddy or ImportBuddy (such as the site URL of the backup, creation date, BackupBuddy & WordPress version used to make the backup, etc.).

From the Backup page, hover over the status of the backup and you’ll see the View Details link appear.  This link will take you to the new backup status page.

Email improvements

BackupBuddy 4.0 includes several new email improvements including:

  • A new setting to be notified if no new backups have occured in X number of days so you can be reminded if backups don’t occur

  1. Does importbuddy offer the ability to import from Amazon S3 yet? I am having some serious problems migrating a large site for testing seemingly because this feature is missing. Otherwise this is really nice software!

  2. Question about SQL restore:

When restoring a database, will all tables within the present be removed, or will the restore replace existing table, and add the ones that are missing, but leave all others?

The reason i am asking this, is that sometimes i would like a restore DROP ALL tables within the present db.

    • By default ImportBuddy (BackupBuddy’s restore tool) warns of conflicting tables on restore. By selecting the “Advanced Options” button on the lower right of the “Database Settings” page during restore you can select to delete all tables OR delete tables with the same table prefix. So you can do what you are wanting to do (dropping all tables) by using those advanced option(s).
