BackupBuddy 4.0: Part 2 – New Backup Profiles and More

BackupBuddy 4.0 just released with a TON of incredible new features. In part 1, we covered BackupBuddy's new individual file view and restore capabilities. In this post, we'll be showing off BackupBuddy's new backup profiles and several more new features in 4.0. Creating a Backup Profile With BackupBuddy's new backup profiles, you can: Customize each backup type or create your own profile to override default settings Create manual or scheduled backups based on a profile Set custom files or database tables to be backed up per profile as well as change other advanced settings per profile Backup certain areas of the site at a time View file and database exclusions based on any selected profile on Server Information page (this lets the user see what's included in a backup with the size of content to be backed up based on that profile) To get started creating a backup profile, visit the new Backup Profiles tab from BackupBuddy's Settings page.

Creating a Backup Profile

With BackupBuddy’s new backup profiles, you can:
  • Customize each backup type or create your own profile to override default settings
  • Create manual or scheduled backups based on a profile
  • Set custom files or database tables to be backed up per profile as well as change other advanced settings per profile
  • Backup certain areas of the site at a time
  • View file and database exclusions based on any selected profile on Server Information page (this lets the user see what’s included in a backup with the size of content to be backed up based on that profile)
To get started creating a backup profile, visit the new Backup Profiles tab from BackupBuddy’s Settings page.

To edit one of the existing profiles, click the name. This will reveal settings for database and advanced options so you can further customize the Database Only and Complete Backup profiles.

To add a new custom backup profile, click the “+” sign. From here you can select whether to base this profile on the Database Only and Complete Backup settings.

Click +Add and you’ll now see your new backup profile has been added. Use the configuration settings below to customize the profile.

Click Save Profile Settings. Now, If you return to the Backup page, you’ll see your custom backup profile as a new option in the type of backup to run.

Built-in Tutorials

BackupBuddy 4.0 ships with new built-in tutorials to help guide you through the plugin. These new built-in tutorials interactively step through key features of the plugin.
Check them out by clicking on the Tour This Page link in the upper right-hand corner of any BackupBuddy page.

Create Manual Backup & Send to Destination

You’ll now find a new option to have manual backups automatically sent to a remote destination during the backup process.
When creating a manual backup, just select the Send to remote destination as part of backup process link.

Backups Now Store Meta Information

You’ll find new, improved backup status details in the backup listing. Now you can easily see main backup archive information from within BackupBuddy or ImportBuddy (such as the site URL of the backup, creation date, BackupBuddy & WordPress version used to make the backup, etc.).
From the Backup page, hover over the status of the backup and you’ll see the View Details link appear.  This link will take you to the new backup status page.

Email improvements

BackupBuddy 4.0 includes several new email improvements including:
  • A new setting to be notified if no new backups have occurred in X number of days so you can be reminded if backups don’t occur
  • Ability to customize the “from” email address for any email notifications sent by BackupBuddy
  • Error Notification email “Test” link added for verifying email-sending functionality properly works on your server. Verify your server can send error notification emails.
To check out these email notification options, visit the BackupBuddy Settings page and scroll to the Email Notifications section.

  • Performance improved & better zip compatibility
  • More organized tabbed Settings page to make setup easier and accommodate backup profiles
  • Improved ImportBuddy database testing & test interface to help detect server problems earlier on in the process.
  • Streamlined & simplified Restore / Migrate page for ease of use.
  • Better housekeeping and cleanup to help more efficiently cleanup after backups and other functions

How to Update to BackupBuddy 4.0

All current, licensed BackupBuddy, Plugin Dev Suite and Toolkit members will find the BackupBuddy 4.0 update available from within the WordPress dashboard via Plugins > Installed Plugins. You can also download the latest version of BackupBuddy after logging in to the iThemes Member Panel (check out our free Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades plugin for manual updates).
