Here are some of the questions we anticipate our customer community asking as part of the iThemes Builder 5.0 launch.

If you have other questions and need more help, please login to the Builder Support forum and post your questions so our moderators can help you quickly.

Do I have to upgrade my child theme if it’s working properly already?

If you are happy with the way your current website works/functions, you do not have to upgrade your child theme. However, we highly recommend that you do as you will also begin to receive automatic upgrades (provided you license your theme).

What is the benefit of upgrading my child theme?

Upgrading your child theme to our new system will allow us to push automatic updates to your theme (provided you license the theme).

Why do I need to create a customized child theme from the new setup menu?

If you plan on making any customizations to your theme (and you will), you should create a child theme from the new setup wizard. Doing so allows you to make modifications to the newly created child theme and leaves the parent theme intact for automatic updates.

How do I upgrade my child theme?

  1. Make a list of changes and additions/deletions done to the files and folders in the current child theme directory.
  2. Create a full backup of your site (we recommend using BackupBuddy).
  3. Download the latest version of your theme. Note that the name has changed, so instead of BuilderChild-THEMENAME.zip, your theme will now be called Builder-THEMENAME.zip.
  4. Upload/Install your theme .zip file and make sure to activate the new theme.
  5. On activation, you will be presented with the option to create a new child theme for your customizations.
  6. Re-apply the changes you noted in step 1 to this newly created child theme.
  7. Check the site and ensure that everything is okay.
  8. That’s it! Congratulations.

What if I’m running Builder as the active theme?

If you currently run Builder as the active theme and have not updated to Builder 5.0, follow these steps:

  1. Make a list of changes and additions/deletions done to the files and folders in the current theme directory.
  2. Create a full backup of your site (we recommend using BackupBuddy).
  3. Download the latest version of Builder.
  4. Follow the Codex instructions on how to upgrade Builder.
  5. Activate Builder.
  6. On activation, you will be presented with the option to create a new child theme for your customizations.
  7. Re-apply the changes you noted in step 1 to this newly created child theme.
  8. Check the site and ensure that everything is okay.
  9. That’s it! Congratulations.

What if I’m running an iThemes-provided child theme?

If you’d like to continue to use your iThemes-provided child theme (with your own customizations), you can update Builder Core to receive automatic updates of Builder.

If you would like to move into the new system we have in place that provides designed themes with Builder updates, you can go this route as well. Both options are outlined below:

To only upgrade Builder Core to version 5:

  1. Always create a backup of your site (we recommend using BackupBuddy).
  2. Download the latest version of Builder Core.
  3. Follow the Codex instructions on how to upgrade Builder.
  4. That’s it! After Updating to Builder 5, you will no longer have to use the Easy Theme and Plugin Upgrades plugin, as you’ll receive automatic upgrades to Builder (provided you enter your license).

If you’d like to update your iThemes-provided child theme to the new system and create a new child theme:

What if I’m running a fully custom child theme?

Builder will continue to work in the same way that you have always known. Here are the steps to update to Builder 5:

  1. Always create a backup of your site (we recommend BackupBuddy).
