Many of our customers have been receiving notices from their hosts about the phasing out of PHP 5.2 and 5.3 on their servers. This update can potentially cause issues if you aren’t running the latest versions of themes and plugins with PHP 5.4 support.
Steps to Avoid PHP Version Compatibility Issues
To ensure that your site doesn’t experience any downtime due to PHP version compatibility, we recommend the following:
- Ensure that all of your themes and plugins are updated to their latest versions. Current iThemes customers can download the latest versions of their themes and plugins from the iThemes Member Panel or update automatically after licensing your products using our new licensing system.
- Manually update any themes or plugins that may not support automatic updates from within the WordPress dashboard. This includes products downloaded from sources other than WordPress.org.
- For custom plugins and themes or plugins and themes that have not been updated in the past couple of years, contact the author to ensure that the code is compatible with PHP 5.4 and above.
- Ask your hosting company if it is possible to upgrade to PHP 5.4. If only PHP 5.3 is available, that will work, but PHP 5.4 or above is recommended.
Download the Show PHP Version Plugin
If you’re unsure about the current PHP version your server is running, we created this simple plugin to display your current PHP version information.
Just download the Show PHP Version Plugin and upload it to your WordPress site. Upon activation, you’ll see a notice with your current PHP version information.
Use Sync to Keep Your Themes and Plugins Updated
To help make the process of keeping your themes and plugins up-to-date easier, we created iThemes Sync, a new way to manage updates for all of your WordPress sits in one central location.
All current iThemes customers can login to your custom Sync Dashboard here and download the Sync plugin. Check out our Sync Quick Setup tutorial for more information on setting up Sync to keep your WordPress themes and plugins updated.
