Introducing iThemes Sync’s Fresh New Look for Managing All Your WordPress Sites

Starting today, iThemes Sync has a new beautiful and modern design. It is fresh but yet familiar! You’ll notice the same focus on available updates, your individual sites, and the helpful tasks you can perform.

Do More with Fewer Clicks

One consistent item of feedback we’ve heard about the Sync interface is that it was sometimes difficult to find certain tasks or that things were “buried” in various places. With this refresh of the UI, we’ve been committed to simplifying some of the most important actions you can take from Sync so you can do more with fewer clicks.

On Sync’s home page, you will find every site connected to your Sync account. In addition, every item in the Site List now has a menu. We updated the Site List Menu to remove the clutter and bring the most used menu items to the forefront.

Let’s take a look at everything you do from the Site Menu.

The collapsed Site menu has 7 different options:

  1. View Your Site Overview – Links to the site’s Overview page. (More on this later.)
  2. Visit Site – You can now visit the frontend of the site with a single click.
  3. Log in to Site WP Admin – You can now log into the site with a single click.
  4. View Uptime Status – Add or view your site’s uptime status.
  5. See Available Updates – See how many updated are available for the site.
  6. Change Sync Plugin Settings – Click the settings cog-wheel to hide or show the Sync plugin on the site. You also have the option to disconnect the site from Sync and uninstall the plugin.
  7. Expand Menu -Click the down arrow to uncover more options.

The expanded menu has 3 additional tabs.

1. Updates – View and perform updates on the site for your plugins, themes, or WordPress core.

2. Notes – Add and view tags and notes to your site. Sync’s Notes feature is a handy way to keep notations about your Synced sites. For example, if you added customizations to theme or plugin files that could be lost with an update, add a reminder. Tag business sites, personal sites, client sites, live, non-live or however you want to be able to identify your sites.

3. Hosting Info – View hosting information for sites created using iThemes Hosting.

A Reorganized Site Overview Page

Sync’s individual site view allows you to perform site-specific admin actions such as running WordPress plugin and theme updates, making remote WordPress backups and more.

Clicking the URL in the Site List menu will take you to the Site Overview page. The Site Overview page has been reorganized a bit, but all the old familiar options are still there, including the ability to manage plugins, themes, posts and pages, comments, analytics, users, and your WordPress settings.

Your Sites Now Load Faster in iThemes Sync

You’ll notice how zippy it feels moving around iThemes Sync. We heard from many of you with hundreds of sites connected to Sync that sometimes it would seem to take forever for Sync to load all of your sites. So with this update, we focused on speeding up the time it takes for Sync to load all your sites.

When you first log into your account, Sync communicates with every site in your SIte List to make sure the information about your site is up to date. Before this update, after logging in, Sync would send three separate requests to every site connect to your Sync account. For example, if you have 300 sites linked to your account, Sync would have to send 900 requests every time you logged in to get the required information about your sites.

One of the primary goals of this rewrite was to make Sync more efficient at getting the data it needs from sites. So we added a queuing system, we can get all the same information that used to be 900 requests in just 15 requests.

Reducing the amount of requests Sync needs to make has drastically reduced the time you have to wait on Sync to load your site. So, what will you do with all of your new free time?

Optimized Optimization

Another very noticeable example of Sync’s improved efficiency is the Database Optimization tool. From iThemes Sync, you can make sure your WordPress sites are running efficiently with WordPress optimizations. Sync handles actions like cleaning out post revisions, spam comments, and more.

From the Sync Site Overview page, you have the option to perform the 12 different database optimizations in one go.

Before the update, Sync would send an individual request for each of the 12 optimizations to the site. Now that Sync is more efficient and faster, it only needs to send a single request to perform all 12 optimizations. That’s some efficiency!

Under the Hood: A Modernized & Future-Ready Code Base

Finally, here are a few notes devs will appreciate. Modernizing the codebase has made Sync more efficient and will make future development faster and easier.

Frontend Codebase Now Uses React

The new design is a lot more than just a paint job. Sync’s frontend codebase has been modernized using ReactJS. React is a JavaScript library used for building user interfaces.

More importantly, ReactJS is a major part of WordPress’s future. For example, react powers Gutenberg, the WordPress block editor. Now that Sync is built using ReactJs, it is heading in the same direction as WordPress.

Another benefit of ReactJS is that it will make the future development of Sync easier and faster. Not to mention, it will allow for deep integrations with other iThemes products using ReactJS.

Backend Codebase Now Uses Laravel

We completely rebuilt Sync’s backend using Laravel. Laravel is a PHP framework with expressive, elegant syntax.

What Laravel is and how that improves Sync development isn’t what is important. What is important is how modernizing the codebase makes Sync better for you.

Every product that has been around as long as Sync has is going to accumulate some technical debt. Moving Sync’s codebase to Laravel allowed us to address some of the code bloat and inefficiencies built up over time. iThemes Sync is ready for the future of WordPress!
