I purchased backupbuddy unlimited a year ago, and have been sent an email asking me to renew. My understanding was that I would receive support for one year, and nothing thereafter, but would still be able to continue using the plugin on new installations etc - but just with whatever version update I had at the time of expiry.
Is this correct, or do I need to purchase again just to keep using the plugin on new projects?

What you have written is my understanding when I purchased similar.You get one-years support from the time of initial purchase and you can continue using the product, in your case BackUpBuddy, for as long as you want. If you don't renew after the initial year you are not entitled to any upgrades or support. So, you would only renew if you wanted to keep up with the latest releases and be able to access the support structure.
My opinion is, that with the continual development that the people at iThemes do, the renewal is a great option.
