“Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” – Zig Ziglar
Do you see the problem, or do you see the possibility?
Do you focus on the storm or seek out the silver lining?
It’s not what happens that makes a difference, but how you choose to see and respond to what happens. Your attitude determines your direction. If you want to change where you are and move to where you want to be, start with a change of attitude.
The young boy pointed out the window. “There’s another old Mustang, Mom. I never realized how many old Mustangs there were around here.”
His mom nodded. “There are a lot of old Mustangs, but that’s not the reason you see them.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, on the weekends, you and your dad go to car shows together, right?”You see the thing you are in the habit of searching for
“And what do you like the most about those car shows?”
“We like seeing the restored cars.”
“But which ones?”
“Dad likes the Mustangs the best, so we look for those.”
“Exactly.” His mom waited to see if he would catch on.
“So, what you’re saying is that I see Mustangs because that’s what we look for when we are together.”
“Yes. You see the thing you are in the habit of searching for.”
What Are You Looking For?
What you see is what you get, so create an attitude of positive opportunities by seeing the possibilities around you.
1. Look from a different perspective
You can’t change how much liquid the glass holds without adding more liquid, but you can change how you see the liquid in the glass. Look down from the top, and the glass appears full. Look from the existential, and the glass is full – of liquid and air. Look from a smaller glass, and the amount in the larger glass fills the smaller one. Your perspective defines your view. If you aren’t happy with what you see before you, change your perspective to change your attitude.
2. Look with a different mindset
The way you choose to see something will determine how you move, how you feel, and how you act to that moment. You move everything when you move your mindset. It’s not what you can’t do, but what you can do. It’s not what you are missing, but what you have. It’s what they’ve stopped, but what can still be done. You change your attitude about your moment when you shift to a different mindset.
3. Look from a different time limit
You have to do it now, or you will miss out. If advertising has taught us anything, it’s that now is the only time there. When it comes to changing your attitude from a negative to a positive, looking at things from a different time limit opens up the possibilities. If not now, then when? If not now (for all of it), then how much can you do right now? Remember: little bits add up to big changes. You control your time so change your attitude by choosing to see things from a different time limit.
4. Look in a different direction
If you take one step forward and one step back, you aren’t losing ground. You’re learning to dance. If you take two steps to the side, you’re learning to shift around the blocks. It’s not always the forward progress that gets you to the destination. Sometimes you have to pivot, shift, or adjust. When you look at the moment with a different direction thought process, you can change your attitude about your journey.
5. Look from a different understanding
When you get caught in the storms, let your mind move beyond the restrictions of the wind and waves into the energy or strength that comes from those powers. You only know what you know. You don’t know what you don’t know. When you come to a block or a detour, see with an understanding beyond your knowing. You won’t be limited by what you know, and you won’t be hindered by what you don’t know. Instead, you’ll be free to find your new understanding of the situation. When you get caught in the storms, let your mind move beyond the restrictions of the wind and waves into the energy or strength that comes from those powers. You won’t be caught in the moment but instead, become empowered through the moment. A shift in understanding will change your attitude into a force for possibilities.
A young boy ran towards the house, past his mom sitting at the picnic table out front.
“Where are you going,” she called to him.
“To get a popsicle,” he called back.
“You can’t get a popsicle,” she demanded.
“Yes. I can.” He responded without hesitation.
Her dad watched the exchange with a smile. “He’s not defying you,” her dad added, noticing her frustration.
“What do you mean? I told him he couldn’t, and he told me he could. How is that not defying me?”
“You told him he couldn’t. He told you he could – as in, he is able to do what you thought he wasn’t able to do. It’s perspective.”
When you are pursuing your goals and dreams, attitude will determine your direction. Attitude will dictate your success. Attitude will make a difference in how you live your life. If you want to live big possibilities, then dare to change your attitude into one that believes the possibilities are real.
