We’ve been pulling lessons from Year of Yes, a book by the producer of the hit TV shows Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal, Shonda Rhimes. The last lesson we want to look at is really at the center of the WordPress ethos: Giving back.
In her commencement speech at Dartmouth, Rhimes reminds us that, “Yes, it is hard out there. But hard? Is relative.”
You may be having a tough day with your computer crashing or a client whining or even serious issues like losing a job or worse. But most of us have it pretty good. We’re able to launch our freelance careers and choose our destiny.
Rhimes offers some needed perspective:
“Elsewhere in the world, girls are being harmed simply because they want to get an education. Slavery still exists. Children still die from malnutrition. In this country, we lose more people to handgun violence than any other nation in the world. Sexual assault against women in American is pervasive and disturbing and continues at an alarming rate. … [So] as you stare at the lint in your navel, have some perspective.”
Use that perspective to give back. Find a cause you love and support it. That’s how WordPress came to be. Open-source software shared with the wider world.
So find your own way to give something back. Maybe you want to volunteer with WordPress or support local nonprofits or something else. Whatever it is, find your way to make a mark.
